Nestled in the heart of the Auvergne Rhône-Alpes region, Le Puy-en-Velay is a veritable cultural interlude. The Vellavi city, which is the European capital of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela (known as the ways of Saint James in English), is a jewel of heritage. It is characterised by its emblematic monuments that take a real advantage of the landscape shaped by volcanoes to occupy remarkable and impressive sites! The statue of Notre-Dame de France overlooks the city whilst the chapel of Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe (Saint Michel of the Needle) is built at the top of a dizzying path. As for the Notre Dame Cathedral, a major element of the entire history of religious architecture, its construction was a genuine feat of technical prowess. This starting point for thousands of pilgrims is listed as UNESCO world heritage as part of the ways of Saint James. The Velay area lies at a crossroads of national hiking trails and is therefore an exceptional playground for walkers. At the heart of the upper basins of the Loire and Allier rivers, the region of Puy-en-Velay is also an ideal place to indulge in white water sports.
