La Voulte-sur-Rhône is the administrative centre of an administrative district with approximately 5,000 inhabitants, and has developed at the foot of the hills on the right bank of the Rhône river. The castle overlooking the town was built on a rocky outcrop between the 12th and 14th centuries, with its fortified centre forming the heart of the old village. Sport has always occupied an important place in the history of the town, with the highlight quite naturally being the unforgettable crowning of the town’s rugby union team as French champions in 1970. Certified as a 2-star graded ‘active and sporty town’ in 2019, La Voulte-sur-Rhône has put in place a dynamic and determined sports policy. As a gateway to two gentle mobility networks, the Dolce Via and ViaRhôna, the town has chosen to give pride of place to events promoting “leisure cycling”, whilst also playing a full part in the cycling development policy implemented by the Ardèche department authorities.
